Junk Car Removal: How Pickup Works, Costs, and Scams to Avoid

By ScrapMyJunkCar Team. Updated .

Junk car removal is a service where a buyer, salvage yard, or recycler comes to you, tows away an old, damaged, or non-running vehicle, and usually pays you for it on the spot. The buyer handles the hauling because the car has value to them as scrap metal, reusable parts, or a rebuild project.

For most sellers, the removal itself is free: the towing cost is built into the offer. The exceptions are cars in hard-to-reach places, vehicles with very little scrap value, or companies that quote high and then subtract fees at pickup. This guide explains how the process works, what to have ready, and how to tell a legitimate service from a bad one.

What Junk Car Removal Actually Includes

A typical junk car removal service covers three things:

  1. An offer for the vehicle. You describe the car (year, make, model, condition, location) and get a quote.
  2. Towing. A driver comes with a wheel-lift or flatbed truck and hauls the car away, whether it runs or not.
  3. Payment and paperwork. You sign over the title or other ownership documents, and the driver pays you.

What happens next depends on the buyer. Some cars get resold at auction, some get stripped for parts, and most eventually get crushed and shredded so the metal can be recycled. If you’re curious about that side of it, our guide on what happens to your car after it’s junked walks through it.

Removal isn’t just for wrecks. A car with a blown engine, or one that doesn’t run at all, is still worth something to the right buyer.

How the Junk Car Removal Process Works

Most removals follow the same basic sequence.

1. Get a quote

You provide basic details: year, make, model, approximate mileage, whether it runs, major damage, missing parts, and where it’s parked. Be accurate. If the catalytic converter is gone or the engine was pulled, say so up front. Offers are based on what you describe, and surprises at pickup are the most common reason a price drops.

2. Schedule pickup

Once you accept, you pick a time window. Many services can come within a day or two, though timing varies by location and demand. Our post on how long it takes to junk a car covers what affects the schedule.

3. Pickup day

The driver confirms the vehicle matches the description, checks your paperwork, and loads the car.

4. Payment and handoff

You get paid, sign the title where required, and keep a receipt or bill of sale. Then you handle a few follow-up tasks (covered below).

What to Prepare Before Pickup

A little preparation keeps the visit quick and protects you after the sale.

  • Title or proof of ownership. Most buyers want the title. If yours is missing, see our guide to junking a car without a title and check your state’s rules in our state car title guides.
  • Photo ID. The name should match the name on the title.
  • Lien release, if there was a loan. If a lender is listed on the title, you’ll usually need proof the loan was paid off.
  • Keys, if you have them. Helpful but often not required.
  • Personal items removed. Check the glove box, trunk, under seats, and visor. Remove toll tags and garage door openers.
  • Clear access. Make sure a tow truck can reach the car. Move other vehicles, and tell the company if the car is in a backyard, tight garage, or has flat tires.

Paperwork you should keep

Hold on to a copy of the signed title (photograph it before handing it over), a bill of sale or receipt with the buyer’s business name, the date, and the VIN. Those records matter if a parking ticket or toll violation shows up later.

Does Junk Car Removal Cost Anything?

In most cases, no. Buyers make money from the car itself, so the tow is part of their cost of doing business. You should expect either a cash offer with free towing or, for cars with very little value, a free haul-away with no payment.

Removal may cost you something, or reduce your offer, when:

  • The car is hard to reach. Vehicles deep in a backyard, in a ditch, or behind locked gates may need extra equipment.
  • The location is remote. Long drives cut into the buyer’s margin.
  • The car is stripped. A shell with no engine, transmission, or converter is worth mostly its weight, and towing eats into that.
  • The buyer charges hidden fees. “Towing fee,” “environmental fee,” or “paperwork fee” that weren’t mentioned when you got the quote.

A legitimate service will tell you about any charges before pickup, not after the car is on the truck. If you’re trying to figure out what your car should bring in, our guide to how much a junk car is worth explains the factors buyers weigh, such as weight, metal prices, and in-demand parts.

Red Flags and Junk Car Removal Scams

Most removal companies are honest, but watch for these tactics.

The bait-and-switch offer

You get a high quote over the phone, then the driver arrives and cuts it sharply, citing problems you already disclosed. If the car matches your description, you’re entitled to decline and call someone else.

Pressure to decide now

The Federal Trade Commission notes that pressure to act immediately is a classic sign of a scam, and that honest businesses give you time to decide. Be wary of “this price is only good for the next ten minutes.”

Unusual payment methods

Be cautious of anyone who wants to pay you with a method that’s hard to verify, or who asks you to send money for any reason. The FTC warns that scammers favor payment methods like wire transfers, gift cards, payment apps, and cryptocurrency because they’re hard to reverse.

No paperwork

A buyer who won’t give you a receipt, doesn’t want the title, or tells you to leave the title blank is a problem. An open (unassigned) title can leave your name attached to the car.

Unlicensed operators

Many states license businesses that buy and dismantle vehicles. Licensed recyclers, salvage yards, and junk yards are also required to report the vehicles they acquire to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), a federal database run by the Department of Justice that helps prevent title fraud and resale of stolen or unsafe vehicles. A legitimate buyer will know about these obligations. If you want to compare options, our junkyard directory is a place to start.

After the Car Is Gone

Removal isn’t completely finished when the truck pulls away. A few final steps protect you:

  • Notify your DMV of the transfer. Many states have a seller notice. California, for example, asks sellers to submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability within five days, and Texas encourages a Vehicle Transfer Notification within 30 days so you aren’t held responsible for later tickets or tolls.
  • Handle the license plates. Depending on your state, you may keep, transfer, or surrender them.
  • Cancel insurance and registration once the transfer is complete.

Our guide on removing plates and canceling insurance covers this step by step, and you can see the full process on our how it works page.

FAQ

Is junk car removal really free?

Usually, yes. Most buyers include towing in their offer because they profit from the car itself. Charges can apply for difficult locations or very low-value vehicles, but a reputable company will tell you before pickup.

Do I need to be there for pickup?

Most buyers want the owner present to verify ID, sign the title, and receive payment. Some allow arrangements where the paperwork is left with the car, but ask first and get the terms in writing.

Can a junk car removal company take a car without a title?

Sometimes. It depends on your state’s rules and the buyer’s policy. Some states allow alternative proof such as registration plus ID, especially for older vehicles. Check your state’s DMV guidance before you sell.

What if the driver lowers the price at pickup?

If the car matches what you described, you can say no. Taking photos of the car before pickup and describing it honestly up front makes it harder for anyone to justify a last-minute cut.
