What affects its junk value

  • Age: at 25 years old, most of a 2001 Avalon's value comes from reusable parts and scrap metal, not resale.
  • Weight: as a full-size car, it weighs less than a truck or SUV, so its value leans more on parts than on scrap weight. See how scrap prices by weight work.
  • Catalytic converter: like all gas and diesel cars, it has a catalytic converter containing precious metals, one of the most valuable parts on a junk car. An offer assumes it's still in place. More on catalytic converters.
  • Recalls: NHTSA lists 2 recalls for the 2001 Avalon. Open recalls don't stop you from selling or junking it.
  • Known problems: owners reported the most issues with the vehicle speed control, typically around 60,000 miles. If that's what failed on yours, it can still be sold as-is.

SteeringJul 2010 · NHTSA campaign 10V345000

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2000-2004 Avalon vehicles. Due to improper casting of the steering lock bar, there is a possibility that a minute crack may develop on the surface of the lock bar. Such a crack may expand over a long period of repeated lock and unlock operations, and eventually the lock bar could break.

Risk: Should the steering lock bar break, the steering wheel would lock and the driver would lose the ability to steer the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

StructureMar 2001 · NHTSA campaign 01V072000

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The front sub frame assembly has not been adequately welded.

Risk: This condition could cause failure of the assembly following long-term usage, increasing the risk of a crash.
