What affects its junk value

  • Age: at 18 years old, most of a 2008 V50's value comes from reusable parts and scrap metal, not resale.
  • Weight: as a wagon, it weighs less than a truck or SUV, so its value leans more on parts than on scrap weight. See how scrap prices by weight work.
  • Catalytic converter: like all gas and diesel cars, it has a catalytic converter containing precious metals, one of the most valuable parts on a junk car. An offer assumes it's still in place. More on catalytic converters.
  • Recalls: NHTSA lists 3 recalls for the 2008 V50. Open recalls don't stop you from selling or junking it.

2008 Volvo V50 recalls

NHTSA lists 3 safety recalls covering the 2008 Volvo V50. Open recalls don't stop you from selling or junking the car, but check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see which apply to yours.

EquipmentNov 2010 · NHTSA campaign 10V566000

Volvo is recalling certain vehicles equipped with garmin 760 portable global positioning system (gps) units because the batteries on those units may overheat.

Risk: An overheated battery could lead to a fire.

SteeringJul 2008 · NHTSA campaign 08V329000

Volvo is recalling my 2008-2009 vehicles. A section of the power steering return line hose was not properly vulcanized (cured) and does not meet specifications. If the power steering return hose fails, a sudden rupture of the hose can occur.

Risk: This can result in a rapid drainage of the power steering fluid in the system and a complete loss of power assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.

StructureApr 2008 · NHTSA campaign 08V197000

Volvo is recalling 7 my 2008 V50 passenger vehicles equipped with roof rails. Bolts have been found to be out of specification. This has caused less tread length on the bolts which in turn has lead to insufficient clamping force in the joint due to the washer getting stuck when tightening the bolts.

Risk: When carrying roof cargo, the rails may come loose during heavy braking and/or sudden stops increasing the possibility of a crash.
